Century celebration--The Register-Guard (She couldn't see him very well, but she could feel his furry paw. "Oh, I don't know," Florence King Douglas said, when asked her thoughts on the rather large mallard standing next to her. "I suppose he's very acceptable." Douglas was kind to the University of Oregon mascot Thursday, her 100th birthday, even if he did initially hug the wrong Emerald Valley Assisted Living resident when he made his appearance. Oops. The Duck doesn't exactly have the best vision either, trying to peer out of that massive bill... a 1931 UO alum, got the birthday present with the two webbed feet courtesy of family and friends who invited the mascot to surprise her at the south Eugene assisted living facility.)
Authors lend voices to fight hunger:--The Corvallis Gazette Times (Nine accomplished Oregon authors will turn stories and poems into food for the hungry at "The Magic Barrel: A Reading to Fight Hunger," an annual benefit for Linn Benton Food Share. The event will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Corvallis High School Main Stage Theatre, 1400 N.W. Buchanan Ave. This year's Magic Barrel includes two Oregon State University writers with recently released books. ... Other featured writers include Margaret Anderson, Geri Doran, George Estreich, Gregg Kleiner, Aria Minu-Sepehr, Cindy Smith and Jana Zvibleman. ... As is the case every year, many of the authors have won prestigious awards for their work. This year, recent Oregon transplant Doran, a professor at the University of Oregon, will read from her poetry collection, "Resin," which won the Walt Whitman Award.)
UO to Add Cinema Studies as New Major in 2010--KEZI TV (The University of Oregon is adding a new undergraduate major: Cinema Studies. The university will aim the new major at meeting student demand and the needs of an expanding, multimillion-dollar Oregon film and video industry. The program will focus on the study of moving image media, including film, television, video and other emerging digital forms, from the perspective of history, theory, aesthetics and production.)
