EUGENE–Masami Teraoka and his assistant Lynda Hess will explore confession in contemporary society at a free public lecture from 5—6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 16, in Room 138 of Gilbert Hall, 955 E. 13th Ave. on the University of Oregon campus.

A reception will follow at the Museum of Art, 1430 Johnson Lane, where refreshments will be served and gallery viewing hours will be extended to 8 p.m.

Teraoka and Hess will speak in conjunction with the University of Oregon Museum of Art’s current exhibition, "Web of Confession: Paintings by Masami Teraoka," which will be on display through May 9. The collection of 21 paintings by this preeminent Japanese artist offers contemporary approaches to religion, confession, sexuality, gender and technology while providing fascinating commentary on the contemporary world as the 21st century approaches. Viewer discretion is advised due to the subject matter of some of Teraoka’s sharp-edged images.

Hess is a writer and an artist who has exhibited in Japan and Hawaii. She is the former editor and publisher of Artbeat, Hawaii’s only arts publication, and currently is an art critic for the Honolulu Weekly. Hess has written on Masami’s work in various magazines including Shambhala Sun and Art Asia Pacific. She and Teraoka have lectured extensively together.

The Museum of Art, accessible to people with disabilities, is open from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. Suggested admission is $3, except on Wednesdays when the MusEvenings! program offers free extended viewing hours from 5—8 p.m. Museum members, students, UO employees and children are admitted free.
