EUGENE–Musical repertoire from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries–for voice, strings, symphony and jazz combo–are featured in the four concerts scheduled this week at the University of Oregon School of Music, 961 E. 18th Ave.

Tuesday, April 18–Phi Beta Benefit Recital: Mark Beudert, tenor

Tenor Mark Beudert and pianist Timothy Cheek will give a recital at 8 p.m. at Central Lutheran Church, 1857 Potter St. Proceeds from the concert will benefit scholarships for the local chapter of Phi Beta, professional fraternity for men and women in creative and performing arts. Tickets, costing $7 general admission and $4 for students, will be available at the door or in advance from Phi Beta members.

The program consists of songs by Benjamin Britten and Gabriel Fauré, the "Gypsy Songs" by Antonin Dvorak and a selection of popular Italian songs and arias.

Beudert, a member of the UO voice faculty, received his bachelor of arts degree at Columbia College in New York City and his master of music and doctor of musical arts degrees from the University of Michigan. He has studied voice with Franco Corelli, George Shirley and Spiro Malas, and has coached with Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti and Giuseppe di Stefano. He won the 1986 Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition and has been a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Competition and the G.B. Dealey International Competition.

Beudert has been a leading tenor with the New York City Opera, English National Opera, Turin Opera and Scottish Opera. In 1995, Beudert made his Italian debut at the Teatro Reggio in Kurt Weill’s opera "Street Scene," and, in 1997, he performed the role of Pinkerton in "Madame Butterfly" in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Pianist Cheek has performed as a collaborative pianist in much of the United States, as well as in Hong Kong, Israel and throughout Europe. He holds a doctorate in piano accompanying and chamber music from the University of Michigan, where he studied with Martin Katz. He also holds degrees in piano performance from the Oberlin Conservatory and from the University of Texas at Austin. In addition, he was the recipient of a Fulbright Award to study for one year as an opera coach apprentice at the Teatro Comunale in Florence, Italy.

Since 1994, Cheek has been on the University of Michigan faculty, where he teaches lyric diction classes and serves as music director of Opera Workshop and diction coach for opera productions.

Tuesday, April 18–Oregon Composers Forum

The Oregon Composers Forum will present a concert of new music by graduate composition students at 8 p.m. in Room 198 of the Music Building, 961 E. 18th Ave. Admission is free.

Among the varied selections to be performed are "A Portrait of Nancy," a suite for viola and cello; and "Jhiangm ‘buzoiva" for cello and prepared piano. Composers represented on the program include Christopher Randall, Alex Kelly, Scott Unrein, Paul Lombardi and others.

Wednesday, April 19–The University Symphony: Concerto Concert

The University Symphony, under the direction of Professor Wayne Bennett, will accompany two outstanding student soloists in its annual Concerto Competition concert at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

The soloists were selected last term from a school-wide competition, designed to showcase outstanding performers in a formal symphony concert format.

Jason Hickam, a senior majoring in saxophone performance, will perform "Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Strings" by Alexander Glazunov. Hickam is from Salem and is a student of UO Professor J. Robert Moore.

Lara Wickes, a senior in music education and oboe performance from Corvallis, will perform John Harbison’s "Concerto for Oboe." Wickes is a Robert T. Clark Honors College student at the university and studies oboe with J. Robert Moore.

The orchestra also will perform "Hary Janos Suite" by Zoltan Kodaly.

Friday, April 21–The Jazz Café

The Jazz Cafe presents a variety of student jazz combos at 8 p.m. in the Alumni Lounge at Gerlinger Hall, 1468 University St. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens. Light food and beverages also will be available for purchase.

The Jazz Café is co-sponsored by the Erb Memorial Union Cultural Forum.
