MATHEMATICIAN TO EXAMINE RUBICS CUBE, MORE IN LECTURE

EUGENEUniversity of Oregon mathematics professor Gary Seitz will explore the puzzles of "Symmetry, Rubics Cube and Beyond" in a public lecture at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18, in the Alumni Lounge at Gerlinger Hall, 1468 University St. on the UO campus.
Seitz, who heads the UO Department of Mathematics, will target his lecture to a general audience. The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is sponsoring Seitzs lecture, which is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
Seitz is widely recognized as a leading mathematician in the study of algebraic and finite groups. He joined the UO faculty in 1970. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has supported his work for more than 30 years. He also received a NSF Creativity Award in 1991-1993.
Seitz is one of three UO faculty members who were named 1999-2000 CAS Distinguished Professor Award recipients. The College of Arts and Sciences presents this annual award to recognize senior faculty members for their scholarly achievements.
