EUGENE–A former member of the European Parliament, in a free April 6 lecture at the University of Oregon, will talk about how Americans can negotiate the complexities of doing business in Europe under the European Union (EU).

Bryan Cassidy, who was a central player in negotiating safeguards against predatory marketing with Microsoft, will speak on the topic "U.S.-E.U. Relations" at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 6. His talk, sponsored by the university’s Carlton Raymond and Wilberta Ripley Savage Endowment, will be in the Alumni Lounge of Gerlinger Hall, 1468 University St.

Cassidy, a member of the EU Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and Industrial Policy, was a member of the European Parliament from 1984 through 1999.

A former director general of an English trade association, Cassidy retains a close interest in industrial matters.

Cassidy also will meet with Portland-area business leaders on Wednesday, April 5, and is scheduled to meet with UO students on Friday, April 7.

The Savage endowment is financed by a bequest from the estate of Carleton Raymond Savage, a 1920 UO alumnus and Salem native, and his wife Wilberta Ripley Savage. The endowment was established in 1998 and is matched by state funds.

For more information, call Lori O’Holloren, research coordinator for the UO’s Center for Asian and Pacific Studies, (541) 346-1521.
