EUGENE–Art songs for vocalists and pianists, works for brass quintet, and music for chamber orchestra take the spotlight in three concerts scheduled this week at the University of Oregon School of Music, 961 E. 18th Ave.

Monday, May 1–Poetry in Song

Vocal majors and pianists at the School of Music will present a group recital titled "Poetry in Song" at 7 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. Admission is free.

The performance is the third of three in a series of "Poetry in Song" recitals built on a wide variety of art songs. The performers are graduate and undergraduate students of voice faculty members Ann Tedards, Mark Beudert and Milagro Vargas.

Wednesday, May 3–Faculty Artist Series: Oregon Brass Quintet

The Oregon Brass Quintet will give a Faculty Artist Series recital at 8 p.m. in Beall Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $7 general admission and $4 for students and senior citizens.

Selections on the program include "Laudes" by Jan Bach, "Colchester Fantasy" by Eric Ewazen, "Four Renaissance Villancicos" arranged by Hinterbichler and "Dance" by Wilke Renwick.

The Oregon Brass Quintet is one of three faculty ensembles at the School of Music. Members of the quintet include trumpeters George Recker and Stephen Dunn, hornist Ellen Campbell, trombonist Jeffrey Williams and tubist Andrew Gamet.

Thursday, May 4–UO Chamber Orchestra

The UO Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Professor Wayne Bennett, will perform at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

The Chamber Orchestra, a new ensemble formed this year to explore repertoire outside the realm of the full symphony orchestra, will perform "Brandenburg Concerto No. 3" by Johann Sebastian Bach, "Variaciones Concertantes for Chamber Orchestra" by Alberto Ginastera and "Dance Preludes for Clarinet Solo, Harp, Piano, Percussion and String Orchestra" by Witold Lutoslawski.

The Lutoslawski piece will feature Assistant Professor Fritz Gearhart as conductor, with Wayne Bennett as clarinet soloist. Bennett is professor of clarinet studies at the School of Music in addition to his responsibilities as director of orchestral studies. He has been a clarinetist with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and Indiana Chamber orchestras, served as principal clarinet with the Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra, and is currently principal clarinet with the Sunriver Festival Orchestra. Bennett also has been a freelance artist in Dallas and Los Angeles.
