EUGENE–A farewell concert for Julia Neufeld, director of the University Gospel Choir for the past five years, heads the roster of six concerts offering music that is inspiring, brassy, contemporary, jazzy and cutting edge this week at the University of Oregon School of Music, 961 E. 18th Ave.

Monday, May 8–The Mighty Tubas of Spring

Tuba students of Richard Frazier will present a class recital titled "The Return of the Mighty Tubas of Spring" at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. Admission is free.

The centerpiece of the program will be original solo works for tubas and euphoniums by Halsey Stevens, Joseph Horowitz, Alexander Lebedjew, Solomon Cohen and Henry Fillmore, as well as transcriptions of familiar works by Handel, Capuzzi and Vivaldi.

The concert also will feature selections performed by the Oregon Tuba Choir, directed by Richard Frazier and Andrew Gamet.

Tuesday, May 9–Horn Fandango

French horn ensembles from the School of Music and the community will join forces for a special concert event titled "Horn Fandango" at 7:30 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Admission is free.

Ellen Campbell, associate professor of horn at the School of Music, is organizer for the event. She will conduct each of the ensembles, including the Emerald Horn Club, an adult horn group; the Horn Club, composed of middle school and high school horn ensembles; and the UO Horn Choir.

The concert will include a wide variety of musical arrangements, from folk songs to opera, as well as original works for horns.

Wednesday, May 10–The 100th Monkey Ensemble

The Hundredth Monkey Ensemble will perform contemporary music selections in a concert at 8 p.m. in Beall Hall. Admission is free.

The Hundredth Monkey Ensemble, led by Daniel Heila, is a student-run ensemble dedicated to performing adventurous repertoire from the 20th century. Members of the ensemble are graduate students who double as performers and composers.

The program will feature two new student works: "Inri" by Alex Kelly and "... from beyond a doubful year ..." by Daniel Heila. The group also will perform two selections from the 20th century repertoire, "Durations V" by Morton Feldman and "The Yellow Pages" by Michael Torke.

Ensemble members include Daniel Heila, flute; Kurt Doles, clarinet; Alex Kelly, cello; Jeffrey Radcliffe, horn; John Villec, trombone; Andrew Gamet, tuba; Blayne Barnes and Karen Pfister, violin; Mendel Lee, percussion; and Keith Kirchoff, piano.

Thursday, May 11–University Gospel Choir: Farewell Concert for Julia Neufeld

The University Gospel Choir, directed by Adjunct Instructor Julia Neufeld, will give its final concert of the season at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

This also will be the final concert for Neufeld, who will be moving to Portland to sing and teach. She has been an adjunct faculty member at the School of Music since 1995.

The program features some of the ensemble’s greatest hits during Neufeld’s five-year tenure, including "Love Can Move Mountains," "Handwriting on the Wall," "Who’ll Be a Witness," "He’s the Real Thing," "Faith Is the Substance of Things Hoped For" and "Mustard Seed Faith."

The University Gospel Choir is made up of more than 130 UO students, along with instrumental backup provided by Mark Schneider, Gus Russell and Jason Palmer.

Friday, May 12–Oregon Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab Bands

The Oregon Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab Bands will give a jazz concert beginning at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

The featured ensembles are the Oregon Jazz Ensemble, directed by Steve Owen; Jazz Lab Band II, directed by Jared Burrows; and Jazz Lab Band III, directed by Chad Sullivan.

Selections include a wide variety of popular jazz repertoire, including "Papa Lips" by Bob Mintzer, "Last Season" by Maria Schneider, "All or Nothing at All" by Jack Lawrence, and many others.

Saturday, May 13–Future Music Oregon

Future Music Oregon, the Computer Music Center at the University of Oregon, will present a concert at 8 p.m. in Room 198 of the Music Building, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

The concert will feature new works created in the Future Music Oregon Studios for live-performance instruments, real-time computer graphic animation, and Yamaha Disklavier.

Under the direction of Associate Professor Jeffrey Stolet, composers working in the Future Music Oregon studios have been very successful at having their work presented at national and international computer music events. This concert will showcase some recent examples of their creations.
