EUGENE– For the eighth time in as many years, Flux magazine has received the National Magazine Pacemaker award from the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) for its 2000 issue covering complex environmental issues.

Flux, which is produced annually by students from the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication, was one of only eight publications in the nation to receive such distinction this year.

Since its debut in 1993, Flux and its staff have won more than 100 awards for writing and design. The magazine is produced in the Ballmer Graphics Lab at Allen Hall.

The National Magazine Pacemaker award is considered the highest honor for college student-run publications and is based on content, quality of writing, leadership, design, photography, art and graphics. Flux competes against student newspapers and magazines from all over the nation for this recognition.

The 2000 issue featured a cover story, "Burning Questions," about the debate over the Umatilla Chemical Depot in northeastern Oregon. Other stories were about coyote eradication in the West and the renewal of life on western Washington’s Mount St. Helens 20 years after the eruption.

All Pacemaker winners will be honored at the ACP/CMA National College Media Convention awards ceremony on Oct. 27 in New Orleans.

In addition to winning the Pacemaker award, the 2000 issue also received many other impressive accolades.

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) presented the magazine with 17 awards for creative art and design, including a Certificate of Merit for overall design and first place for the general use of typography throughout a magazine.

The CSPA also gave the magazine the Gold Medal Award and four All-Columbian Awards. For those honors, the magazine earned 998 points out of a possible 1,000 and had perfect scores in the areas of content and creativity.

"Flux is an attractive, informative, interesting magazine–a gift to all who turn its pages. Much praise to the writers, photographers, editors and staff, advisers and professors for an elegant piece of journalism," the judges wrote in their summary.

Several individual students received CSPA awards as well.

Benjamin Scott, Kim Wallace, Kipp Wettstein and Matthew Landan received awards for their photography. Cassie Keller, Katie Miller and Justin Kistner received recognition for typography and design.

Jamie Passaro received a Certificate of Merit for her personal essay, "At a Fork in the Road," the story of a vegetarian environmentalist coming to terms with her logging town past.

Flux is planned, written, edited, designed and produced by students who are hired by journalism faculty advisers Bill Ryan and Carol Ann Bassett through a competitive process similar to a professional hiring.
