EUGENEFrederick Dahlquist will give a public lecture, "Decisions, Decisions, Decisions: How Bacteria Make Up Their Minds," at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24, in the Alumni Lounge at Gerlinger Hall, 1468 University St. on the University of Oregon campus.
Dahlquist, who heads the UO Department of Chemistry and is a former director of the UO Institute of Molecular Biology, is internationally recognized for his leadership in structural biology and microbiology. Throughout his 30 years at the university, Dahlquist has focused on problems of macromolecular recognition and dynamics. His research has led to a better understanding of how proteins recognize and interact with each other to carry out their biological function.
Dahlquist has received numerous honors, including an American Cancer Society Faculty Research Award and a Sloan Research Fellowship. In 1998, he was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Molecular Biology.
Dahlquist is one of two UO faculty members who were named 2000-01 College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Distinguished Professors. The college presents this award to honor senior faculty members for their scholarly achievements. In the fall, the college honored Garrett Hongo, a creative writing professor, as a 2000-01 CAS Distinguished Professor.
The College of Arts and Sciences is sponsoring Dahlquists lecture, which is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
