EUGENE–A French horn "fandango," a Community Music Institute youth recital and concerts by two student ensembles are scheduled this week at the University of Oregon School of Music, 961 E. 18th Ave.

Wednesday, May 2–The Oregon Wind Ensemble

The Oregon Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Associate Professor Robert Ponto, will give a concert at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

The Oregon Wind Ensemble, the university’s top concert band, specializes in contemporary literature. Their program will include "Toccata Marziale" by Ralph Vaughan Williams, "Occident et Orient" by Camille Saint-Saëns, "The William Byrd Suite" by Gordon Jacob and "Masquerade Variations on a theme by Prokofiev" by Stephen Michael Gryc.

Thursday, May 3–Pacific Rim Gamelan

The Pacific Rim Gamelan, directed by Associate Professor Robert Kyr, will give a concert of world premieres for Balinese gamelan at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

The Pacific Rim Gamelan is an Indonesian percussion orchestra consisting of nearly 20 student members who compose for and perform on the beautifully crafted instruments of the Balinese gamelan. The metal xylophones, gongs and drums produce a rhythmic and colorful music of bell-like textures and deep gong resonances.

Friday, May 4–Community Music Institute Recital

The School of Music’s Community Music Institute (CMI) will present its third annual recital by young musicians in CMI’s Chamber Music Program at 7 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Admission is free; donations to the program’s scholarship fund will be accepted at the door.

Six string quartets, made up of students in 4th through 12th grade, will perform works by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak and others. The students, who are all from the Eugene-Springfield metro area, are accepted into the Chamber Music Program through audition. They are coached by Sylvie Spengler, Shelley Rich, David Straka and Leslie Sawyer.

Saturday, May 5–Horn Fandango

French horn ensembles from the School of Music and the community will join forces for a special concert event titled "Horn Fandango" at 11 a.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Admission is free.

Ellen Campbell, associate professor of horn at the School of Music, is organizer for the event. She will conduct each of the ensembles, including the Emerald Horn Club, an adult horn group; the HornClub, composed of middle school and high school horn ensembles; and the UO Horn Choir.

The concert will include a wide variety of musical arrangements, from folk songs to opera, as well as original works for horns.
