NATIONAL COLUMNIST EXAMINES IMPACT OF WELFARE REFORM, AMERICA'S DWINDLING COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY

WHAT: Interview opportunity with nationally recognized author, columnist and social commentator Barbara Ehrenreich, the University of Oregon's 1997 Wayne Morse Professor of Law and Politics. Ehrenreich will share her views on the impact of welfare reform and comment on her upcoming address, "The End of Caring: Rewriting the Social Contract."

BACKGROUND:

Ehrenreich is the author of 11 books and is a regular columnist for Time magazine. Her articles, reviews and essays also have appeared frequently in The Nation, Harper's, The Atlantic Monthly, New York Times Magazine, Esquire, The New Republic, Mother Jones, Washington Post Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, Vogue and TV Guide.

Ehrenreich has appeared on the "Today Show," "Good Morning America," "Nightline," "Crossfire," "All Things Considered," "Politically Incorrect" and "The Phil Donahue Show." Her newest book, "Blood Rites: Origins and History of the Passion of War," will be published in May. Her 1989 work, "Fear of Falling: The Inner Life of the Middle Class," was nominated for a National Book Critics' Award.

Ehrenreich will give free public lectures in Eugene and in Portland during her 12-day visit to Oregon, April 7-18. Her lecture schedule includes:

* Monday, April 14--Morse Chair Lecture, "The End of Caring: Rewriting the Social

Contract," 7:30 p.m., First Congregational Church, 1126 S.W. Park Ave., Portland.

* Wednesday, April 16--Morse Chair Lecture, "The End of Caring: Rewriting the Social

Contract," 7:30 p.m., Soreng Theatre, Hult Center for the Performing Arts, One Eugene Centre.

* Friday, April 18--Featured speaker on "Anti-essentialism: A New Form of

Creationism?" for the "enGendering Rationalities" conference, sponsored by the UO Center for the Study of Women in Society, 3:30 p.m., Alumni Lounge, Gerlinger Hall, 1468 University St.

The Wayne Morse Chair was created in 1978 as a living memorial to the late Oregon senator and former dean of the UO School of Law. The chair is an endowed professorship financed by private donations and a matching federal grant.
