WHAT: Two Vietnamese scholars-in-residence at the University of Oregon will meet with middle school students in Eugene to talk about contemporary relations between Vietnam and the United States.
WHEN: Monday, April 28 9 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Vuong and Huynh will talk to students at Kelly Middle School, 850 Howard St., Eugene.
11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Vuong and Huynh will talk to students at Jefferson Middle School, 1650 W. 22nd Ave., Eugene.
WHO: * Dr. Tran Quoc Vuong, visiting professor of peace at the University of Oregon. Vuong, an archaeologist and historian at Vietnam National University-Hanoi, specializes in cultural history and has done considerable research on ethnic minority tribes in the mountainous areas of Western Vietnam.
* Mr. Nguyen Van Huynh, visiting professor at the University of Oregon. Director of the Vietnam Peace Committee and a former diplomat, Huynh has organized numerous peace activities in both Vietnam and in the West. He is affiliated with Hanoi Foreign Studies University and the Viet-My (VN-American) Society.
BACKGROUND: The University of Oregon-Vietnam Sister University Project invited Dr. Tran Quoc Vuong, Mr. Nguyen Van Huynh and Dr. Dang Thanh Le to the UO campus as part of a tradition of shared scholarship and exchange between the two universities that began in 1988. The project promotes global peace through the exchange of ideas that foster free enterprise, democracy and citizen involvement in society. -30- #A-6069/Local
