April 16, 1997 MIDDLE SCHOOL KIDS, PARENTS TO `REACH FOR SUCCESS' APRIL 19 Oregon youngsters will surf the Internet, explore the business world, observe the frontiers of brain research and sample life on a major university campus during the University of Oregon's 10th annual "Reach for Success" visitation day on Saturday, April 19. More than 200 middle school students of color and their parents from all over Oregon will attend this year's full day of events. Dovie Treviño, associate professor of bilingual/multicultural secondary education at Western Oregon State University, will give the keynote talk at 9:30 a.m. in the Ballroom of the Erb Memorial Union, 1222 E. 13th Ave. The hands-on introduction to the university also will include workshops on subjects ranging from creative writing and ceramics to careers, law and journalism for the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth graders. Parents of the 10- to 14-year-olds will attend sessions--several in Spanish--on how to pay for college, admissions options and helping their children succeed in school. "`Reach for Success' is designed to encourage African American, Asian American or Pacific Islander, Chicano or Latino and Native American middle-school students to consider higher education as a viable and positive goal," says Marshall Sauceda, director of the UO Office of Multicultural Affairs. The day's events are scheduled from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. in several campus locations. YAHOO! NAMES UO MOST-WIRED PUBLIC UNIVERSITY IN U.S. The University of Oregon (http://www.uoregon.edu) made the top-six list of America's 100 most wired colleges and is No. 1 among public universities in the nation, according to YAHOO! Internet Life magazine (http://www.yil.com). The print periodical is the product of one of the biggest and most popular World Wide Web search engines. Its May 1997 issue, now on newsstands, reveals the results of a survey it made of all United States colleges and universities linked to the Web. The survey addressed a total of 35 factors such as the number of classes with homework assigned over the Internet, the number of classes with home pages and the number of student home pages. The factors are organized under four main categories with academics given the greatest weight. Only five private universities and no public universities amassed total scores higher than the UO's. The UO got extra credit for being among only 10 universities that offer wireless connectivity.
