WHAT University of Oregon President Dave Frohnmayer will speak to the Coos Bay Rotary Club about changes facing higher education in Oregon as it enters the new millennium.
WHEN Noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, April 28 [Frohnmayer will speak at 12:30 p.m. following the club's lunch and business meeting.] WHERE Coos Bay Rotary Club, Red Lion Inn, 1313 N. Bayshore Dr.e, Coos Bay BACKGROUND Oregon's public universities are remaking themselves in response to unprecedented recent changes in the state's economy, demography, polity and technology. In his speech to the Coos Bay Rotary Club, UO President Dave Frohnmayer will review the changes, outline the future of higher education in the state and focus on the need for continued strong public support.
"Oregon slashed public support for state universities during the past decade and our universities responded with thriftiness and creativity," says Frohnmayer. "For the good of our young people and the future of our state, now is the time to rebuild a smarter, more nimble, accessible and student-centered system for the next century."
A native Oregonian, Frohnmayer is the 15th president of the University of Oregon, the state's 122-year-old center for liberal arts, science and professional studies. He assumed the presidency on July 1, 1994.
Frohnmayer, 57, served as dean of the UO School of Law from 1992-94 before his appointment as president. Frohnmayer was Oregon's attorney general from 1981-1992 and represented Oregon before the U.S. Supreme Court, personally winning six of seven cases. Prior to that, he was a UO professor of law from 1971-80 and represented District 40 (south Eugene and Goshen) in the Oregon House of Representatives for three two-year terms beginning in 1975.
Frohnmayer is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Harvard College and attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees. In 1967, he received his law degree from the University of California at Berkeley. -30- #A-4083/Special
