70% of UO students work part-time

EUGENE--The University of Oregon is giving its student workers an extra pat on the back this week in conjunction with National Student Employment Week, April 6-12.

Five UO students--from Eugene, Springfield and Woodburn--are the first to receive National Student Employment Week awards.

"This award recognizes the contributions of student employees to their colleges and communities," says Linda Huberd, UO Career Center Employment Services specialist. She notes that seven out of 10 UO students work while attending classes, according to the Career Center's most recent biannual Career Survey.

Award criteria include reliability, quality of work, initiative, disposition/attitude, longevity, adaptability and uniqueness of contributions. Nominated by their employers, each of the winning students will receive a gift certificate from the UO Bookstore.

Of 22 students nominated, the five winners are:

  • Kari Anderson, a master's degree graduate student in music education of 1490 Mesa Ave., Eugene, who works at the School of Music. Anderson's organizational skills have been directed to a reorganization of the music school's Cyckler Library. For this project, she has worked enthusiastically with faculty and staff to make the library's collection a readily accessible reference for all.

  • David Boyer, a junior psychology major of 655 Chestnut Dr., Eugene, works at the Oregon Research Institute. In his one year there, Boyer has created court record tracking systems and database files and consulted with other research organizations to learn what methods they use in similar research situations.

  • Adrienne Mitchell, a master's degree graduate student in educational policy and management of 2131 W. 15th Court, Eugene, works at the Looking Glass Job Center School. Having worked at the center for more than one year, Mitchell was hired initially to provide tutoring support for the GED preparation classes. The quality of her instruction resulted in her promotion to teaching algebra to a group of "at-risk" students.

  • Andrew Craven, a senior psychology major of 857 S. 34th Place, Springfield, works at the School of Music. As front of house/box office manager, Craven is involved with 98 percent of the 200 events held each academic year in Beall Concert Hall. In his three and one-half years on the job, he has not only overseen the ushers and managed large crowds, but also transformed the efficiency of box office operations.

  • Isabel Rodriguez, a senior Spanish major of 404 W. Cleveland St., Woodburn, works at the Institute of Neuroscience. In her four and one-half years there, Rodriguez has mastered and worked with several accounting and grant related functions of the institute. "No matter how boring and repetitive the task, she has performed it with quiet efficiency and verve," says retired accountant Junia Lanfear who nominated Rodriguez.

The 17 other UO students nominated for the National Student Employment Week Award, who will receive certificates of appreciation, include:

  • Michelle Dreher, a junior business administration major of Rt. 6, Box 242B, Astoria, who works in the Business and Industrial Sales Program of the Lundquist College of Business.
