EUGENE--A performance of tap and modern dances and concerts featuring classical music of South India and new compositions by undergraduate students are slated this week at the University of Oregon School of Music, 961 E. 18th Ave. For more information, call the UO School of Music weekdays at (541) 346-5678. Sunday, April 26--National Dance Week Concert The UO Department of Dance will present a performance of music and dance to celebrate the first day of National Dance Week. The concert begins at 3 p.m. in the Dougherty Dance Theatre, located on the third floor of Gerlinger Annex, 1484 University St. on the UO campus. Admission is free. Duo pianists Candace Syman-Degler and Werner Meyn will perform a variety of works by George Gershwin, Percy Grainger, Claude Bolling, Darius Milhaud, Johann Strauss and Cole Porter. Richard Meyn, bass, and Dennis Caffey, drums, will join Syman-Degler and Meyn for Bolling's "Sonata for Two Pianos." Associate Professor of Dance Janet Descutner has choreographed rhythm tap works for herself and three other dancers to suites by Gershwin and Bolling. Graduate Teaching Fellow Jennifer Knight-Dills has choreographed a modern dance quintet to the "Modere" section of Milhaud's "Scaramouche Suite" for five dancers from the Department of Dance. Knight-Dills also will perform improvisations on selected themes from the "Porgy and Bess Suite." Call 346-3386 for further information. Sunday, April 26--World Music Series: Classical Music of South India Classical music of South India will be performed in a World Music Series concert at 7:30 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $10 general admission and $8 for students and senior citizens. The concert will feature vocalist Lalitha Krishnan, accompanied by violinist Madurai Gnanasundaram and drummer Ganapathy Raman.
Krishnan is a highly acclaimed exponent of Carnatic (South Indian classical) music. Hailing from an accomplished family deeply rooted in artistic and musical traditions, Krishnan has been a disciple of some of the most eminent teacher-performers in South India. Since her marriage, she has been immersed with one of India's foremost musical families, the Lalgudi lineage. Krishnan is known for the sweetness, purity, vibrancy and depth of her voice, and her emphasis on the emotional content of the music. Her performances combine creativity with the best of traditional classicism. Krishnan has performed extensively in India and recently completed a 34-concert tour of the United States and Canada. She has received the Best Vocalist award from a number of prestigious musical institutions in India. Tuesday, April 28--Oregon Composers Forum New music by UO composition students will be performed by the Oregon Composers Forum at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Admission is free. The program includes several works for string quartet and other assorted chamber music pieces for various instruments. Undergraduate student composers represented on the program are Anne Holt, Matt Svoboda, Austin Bridges, Spencer Lambright, Andrea Reinkemeyer and Nathan Linschied. -30- #P-2181/A&E
