Miller received his doctorate in composition from Columbia University in 1981 and since then has been on the faculty of Northeastern University in Boston, where he is now associate professor and director of the music and media lab. His concert works have been performed throughout the United States and Europe, and his music for the media, most recently the score for a nationally broadcast PBS special, also has been well-received. Miller is an associate editor of Electronic Musician magazine, and he was director of the Boston chapter of the League-ISCM for eight years.

Thursday, May 7--University Gospel Ensemble The University Gospel Ensemble will give its farewell concert to director John Gainer at 8 p.m. in Eugene's First Baptist Church, 868 High St. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens. The program, which also will feature a surprise guest artist, contains a variety of traditional and contemporary African-American gospel music: "Shall Not" by Shawn McLemore, "We Offer Praise" by David Minor, "He's a Keepa" by Patrick Love, "Stand" by Milton Biggham, "Serve You Lord" by Pamela Davis, "Step Back, Let God Do It" by Cynthia Nunn, and more. The University Gospel Ensemble, founded by Gainer 15 years ago, is an advanced group of gospel singers at the University of Oregon. The group strives for authentic performance of black gospel music, including the incorporation of gospel choral choreography into the program. The Gospel Ensemble concerts have been one of the most popular offerings at the music school for years, and this being Gainer's final concert with the group, a large crowd is expected. Tickets will go on sale at the church one hour before the performance. Thursday, May 7--Festival of Trumpets UO trumpet students, under the direction of Associate Professor George Recker, will be featured in a free brassy showcase titled "A Festival of Trumpets" at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Sixteen trumpeters will perform in various combinations of solos, duets, quartets, octets and one brass quintet. Two selections also will feature all 16 students. Works by Mahler, Haydn, Vivaldi, Tull, Loeb, McLaughlin and Turchin will be on the program. -30- #P-2183/A&E
