EUGENE--An eclectic production featuring ballet, jazz, modern and experimental dance styles is in store for audiences attending the annual Spring Student Dance Concert, set Thursday through Saturday, May 14-16, at the University of Oregon.

Titled "Uncommon Ground: A Dance Collective," the performances will begin at 8 p.m. nightly in the Dougherty Dance Theatre at Gerlinger Annex, 1484 University St. The Dougherty Dance Theatre is wheelchair accessible.

The UO Department of Dance and Dance Oregon, an Associated Students of the University of Oregon group, are co-sponsors. The show is produced entirely by undergraduate and graduate dance students under faculty advisement.

Ballet variations include two pieces by Sharon Raffony, a master's degree student and graduate teaching fellow (GTF), titled "Abyssal Figments: Illusions of Darkness, Allusions to Light" and "Rossini Duet," while Emily Russell, a junior, will present a balletic piece titled "Idyllic."

Modern dance contributors include master's degree student and GTF Jennifer Knight Dills' "A New Departure," about loving, loss and saying good-bye; senior Sara Jarrett's "The Portal," inspired from Auguste Rodin's sculptures; freshman Sarah Beth Smith's "Daughter to Daughter," a glimpse into the moments that create a woman's family; senior Janell Becker's "Seasons Change," about love, time and loss; and sophomore Sarah Baker's "Internuntius," a study based on internal and external movements.

Sparrow Hall, a junior, will present a piece choreographed from both modern and African dance influences titled, "Holding up Half the Sky."

Josie Ver Meer, a junior, choreographed "#24," a jazz number which incorporates chairs and plenty of attitude.

Jonette Ford, a winter 1998 graduate in anthropology, and Christie Woodcheke, a senior fine and applied arts major, collaborated to choreograph an experimental dance titled "Shaping Confinement/Touching Limitation" that explores limitation of movement through a restrictive costume.

Ticket sales for "Uncommon Ground: A Dance Collective" begin at 7 p.m. prior to each show. Prices at the door for $6 general admission and $4 for students and senior citizens. General seating will begin at 7:30 p.m.
