EUGENE--Eighteen University of Oregon graduate students will present an eclectic mixture of media and artwork styles at the annual Master of Fine Arts exhibition opening Friday, May 8, at the Museum of Art, 1430 Johnson Lane. The opening reception for the exhibition, which continues through June 14, will be from 5-7 p.m. on May 8. The artists whose works are in this exhibition will attend the free public exhibition opening. In support of a new generation of artists, the museum is asking visitors who attend the opening reception to bring a contribution of art supplies that will be donated to the Eugene Public Schools' Summer Programs. The annual debut exhibition, featuring painting, printmaking, photography, ceramics, fibers, visual design and sculpture, is in collaboration with the Department of Fine and Applied Arts. This exhibition fulfills the final requirements for the Master of Fine Arts degree, the most advanced degree offered by the University of Oregon for studio work in the fine arts. Student exhibitors include Jody Ake, photography; Alex Anderson, ceramics; Thomasina Ruland, painting; Margaret Dahlen, visual design; Veronica Dondero, printmaking; William Drumm, sculpture; Nancy Frazier, ceramics; Jennifer Hawkins, fibers; Viesen Hwang, printmaking; Sarah Joseph, sculpture; Chang-Wook Lee, visual design; Skipper McFarlane, visual design; Lance Pynes, painting; Douglas Reiser, metals/jewelry; Jai Roberts, metals/jewelry; Ken Rowe, sculpture; Heidi Schwegler, metals/jewelry; and Lorena Turner, photography. Exhibiting artists will give three special tours of their work at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20; at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 23; and at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3. This exhibition is sponsored in part by the Ballinger family in memory of Court Ballinger, a UO fine arts student in the 1970s from California. The UO Museum of Art exhibition program for 1997-98 is supported by grants from the Oregon Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. The UO Museum of Art is wheelchair accessible. Museum hours are noon-8 p.m. Wednesday and noon-5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. Admission is $3 for the general public and free with current identification for all students, UO faculty and staff and museum members.
