WHAT University of Oregon President Dave Frohnmayer will speak at the Emerald Empire Kiwanis Clubs Youth Recognition Banquet about the growing importance of higher education in new and challenging times. During the event, the club will honor six outstanding Eugene-area youths, who were selected for their scholarship, leadership and service to the community.

BACKGROUND
In his speech to the Emerald Empire Kiwanis Club, Frohnmayer will discuss the ways the UO is preparing students to meet the challenges of the new millennium.
"As we honor these six outstanding high school students for their successes and accomplishments, it is also important to recognize that the future they face will include new challenges and opportunities we can only imagine," says Frohnmayer. "One certainty is that continuing education will enable them to better meet these challenges and help them continue along their successful paths."
Students to be recognized at the event are Deborah Karasek, South Eugene High School; Rebecca Teran, North Eugene High School; Chad Frosland, Marist High School; Susan Kim, Sheldon High School; Abigail Palmer, Willamette High School; and Mathew Robertson, Churchill High School. Each student will be accompanied by a faculty member from their school and will receive a certificate and a $500 U.S. savings bond from the Emerald Empire Kiwanis Club.
