UO PROGRAMS OFFER INSIGHT, SUPPORT

EUGENE–Two-day conferences and one-day workshops offered by the University of Oregon Substance Abuse Prevention Program (SAPP) during April will cover topics ranging from addictions to stress management.

All sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. in Room 150 of Columbia Hall, 1215 E. 13th Ave. on the UO campus, unless otherwise noted.

• "HIV and Other STDs" will be offered on Saturday and Sunday, April 10—11, in Room 302 of Gerlinger Hall, 1468 University St. on the UO campus. The weekend conference will offer updates on current research and prevention, and provide social and political insights about prevention and infection.

Mary Gossart, director of education and training at Planned Parenthood Health Services of Southwestern Oregon, and Joanne Frank, director of health education at the University Health Center, will lead the two-day session.

• "Success with Stress," a workshop addressing stress management, is scheduled on Sunday, April 11. It will demonstrate techniques for recognizing positive and negative stresses in everyday life and will provide skills for stress reduction. Seminar presenter will be Janai Lowenstein, co-director of the Conscious Living Foundation.

• "Drugs/Headache Management" is scheduled for Saturday, April 17, in Room 133 of Gilbert Hall, 955 E. 13th Ave. on the UO campus. The seminar will enhance understanding of headaches and what people can do to treat them, addressing everything from Western medicine to herbal remedies.

Cydreese Aebi, a clinical pharmacist at Salem Hospital and at Sacred Heart in Eugene and a pharmacology instructor at Lewis and Clark College, will present the seminar.

• "Fetal Alcohol Syndrome" will take place on Saturday and Sunday, April 17—18. Participants will learn to identify causes, signs and symptoms of this syndrome and to develop strategies for understanding the impact it has on the mental and physical development of children and on their families and society.

Diane Malbin is instructor for the weekend conference.

• "Alcohol and Other Drug Recovery Models" will be held on Saturday, April 24. Jay Wurscher, head of a program for addicted mothers and their babies in the Multnomah County Mental Health Department’s Office of Children and Families, will teach participants how to identify, understand, compare and profile several alcohol and drug recovery models.

• "Gambling Addictions" will be offered on Sunday, April 25. Dan Smith, a nationally certified gambling counselor and licensed clinical social worker, will help students understand the dynamics of gambling addiction. The emphasis will be on practical strategies and support to help friends and family members who suffer from the addiction. Smith has taught several courses on the subject and has been the facilitator for recovery and prevention programs.

The one-day workshops offer one unit of college credit and the weekend conferences offer two credits to graduate and undergraduate UO students who attend all sessions and complete all assignments, final examinations or projects. Community professionals and others also are welcome, with certificates available that serve as proof of attendance for application toward professional development hours or for re-certification purposes.

Registration for the one-credit workshops is $40, and the two-credit conferences are $80. Early registration is encouraged.

UO students may use Duck Call to register. Community professionals and students also can register at the Registrar’s Office in Room 220 of Oregon Hall, 1585 E. 13th Ave. on the UO campus until the last business day prior to the sessions.
