EUGENEThe University of Oregon will host the second annual Campus Arts Faire on Saturday, May 15, showcasing the universitys broad range of arts mediafrom the visual and performing arts to literary and cultural explorationsfor arts lovers of all ages.
Starting at 11 a.m. and continuing until 4 p.m., the fair will offer free performances and activities that promise hands-on fun for the entire family. The UO Alumni Association and participating departments are co-sponsoring the event.
"This event is truly a feast of the arts. It provides a wonderful opportunity to sample from the full year of arts offerings in an informal, festive setting," says Jeffrey Jane Flowers, assistant director of community outreach. "Its also a great way to meet artists and experience new art forms."
The fair is centered around the UO Museum of Art, 1430 Johnson Lane; the Erb Memorial Union, 1222 E. 13th Ave.; the Knight Library, 1501 Kincaid St.; and along Johnson Lane.
Information booths will offer complete schedules of the days events as well as performance and activity locations.
Activities for children and the young at heart include face painting by theater arts students, storytelling, origami, sidewalk chalk art and watercolor painting at the Museum of Art. The Museum of Natural History will offer backpack archaeology, and mancala and mask making. At 11 a.m., the UO East European Folk Music Ensemble will perform music and teach traditional dance at the Erb Memorial Union. The Pacific Rim Gamelan, the universitys Balinese percussion orchestra, will present a concert at 11:30 a.m. in the Museum of Art. At noon, a Kids Dance Workshop is scheduled at the Johnson Tent.
Other activities include jewelry making, special docent-led art museum tours and gallery talks, a printmaking open studio, and back-stage tours at Robinson Theatre during technical rehearsals.
Afternoon offerings include music at 1 p.m. from "Dark of the Moon," an upcoming University Theatre play; a 2 p.m. performance by the University Gospel Choir under the direction of Julia Neufeld; poetry readings at 3 p.m.; and ballroom dance lessons at 3:15 p.m.
