SABALHERI! NI HAO! VALKOMMEN! YASOU! SHALOM! SELAMAT PAGI! BEM VINDA!

Those are the answers. But what was the question? Foreign language students from Oregon and Washington high schools can take a stab at figuring that out when they play a foreign language version of Jeopardy at the 21st annual Foreign Language and International Studies Day at the University of Oregon Friday, April 30. Nearly 2,000 teenagers will get a chance to experience international culture at work and play during the 8 a.m.-3 p.m. event at the Erb Memorial Union, 1222 E. 13th Ave. The UO’s Yamada Language Center is sponsoring the day of fun. "We want to show high school students the wonderful variety of languages and cultures they can study at the UO," says Jeff Magoto, center director. Magoto says the celebration shows participants that language study is more than learning words in a textbook. "Students will be immersed in the music, food and dance of those cultures," he says. There will even be a workshop on how to gesture in Italian. Magoto says participants can walk away knowing how to greet someone in languages such as Hebrew, Swahili and Finnish. "They’ll also get a glimpse into the rewards of international travel and will learn about career opportunities in international studies," he explains.
