BACKGROUND

In his commencement address titled "Revenge of the Slackers," Romero will contend that Generation X–which has already confounded its critics by transforming the economy–will transform America’s politics, spiritual life and civic community.

Romero, who was appointed dean of the Charles H. Lundquist College of Business, June 14, 1999, formerly was California’s chief economist under then-Gov. Pete Wilson. Romero served as chief economist and troubleshooter on business and economic operations for Wilson, and was a key player in designing an economic recovery plan for the state that fueled more than $10 billion in economic development.

Before joining the Wilson administration, Romero was a research economist at California's RAND Corporation, and served as director of strategic planning for United Technology Corp.

Romero graduated in 1980 from Cornell University with a dual major in economics and government. He earned a doctorate in policy analysis in 1988 from the RAND Graduate School in Santa Monica, Calif.
