EUGENE--University of Oregon student Timothy Keil (pronounced KYLE) this summer received the 1998 Mark O. Hatfield Architecture Award from the Architectural Foundation of Oregon.

The award, which includes a $2,000 scholarship, honors architecture students who combine outstanding scholarship with exemplary community service. Recipients must be legal residents of Oregon and must be enrolled in an accredited school of architecture in the United States.

Keil, a resident of Central Point, is a fourth-year architecture student at the UO. He is the 1997-98 vice president of the American Institute of Architecture Students, worked as a volunteer at a daycare center, designed changes to Grace Lutheran Church in Eugene and participated in the 1997 Rapid Visual Screening project to identify seismic concerns in downtown Eugene.

The Architectural Foundation of Oregon is a private nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving architectural heritage, enhancing the built and natural environment, ensuring the livability of cities and developing an informed public that demands high-quality design and development.

The foundation established the Mark O. Hatfield Architecture Award in 1997 to recognize Hatfield's long commitment and support for the natural and built environment in Oregon.
