UO EDUCATION STUDENTS RECEIVE AWARDS, SCHOLARSHIPS

EUGENE–Six undergraduates and 11 graduate students at the University of Oregon College of Education received special recognition at a spring awards dinner.

Those receiving awards include:

• Kimberly Anson, a junior educational studies major, 15648 N.W. Overton Dr., Beaverton, who received a full-tuition scholarship, and Melea Frosty, a master’s degree student in educational studies, 1699 N. Terry St., Space 272, Eugene, who received a $4,500 scholarship from the Janette Gunther Drew Endowed Scholarship Fund. Drew established the fund to encourage young people to meet the challenge of educating the next generation.

• Carrie Ebmeyer, a doctoral degree student in school psychology, 414 S.W. Fernwood Way, Beaverton; Kristi Hagans-Murillo, a doctoral degree student in school psychology, 963 Ferry Lane, Apt. 3, and Mark Harvey, a doctoral degree student in special education: developmental disabilities, P.O. Box 3463, both of Eugene; Elizabeth Harn, a doctoral degree student in school psychology, 2013 Los Altos, Clovis, Calif.; Angela Whalen, a doctoral degree student in school psychology, 3519 University Ave., Apt. 203, Des Moines, Iowa; and Meleah Nelson, a doctoral degree student in school psychology, 5565 Highway 12, Morton, Wash., each of whom received $1,500 Claire Wilkins Chamberlein Memorial Research Awards. These awards help support outstanding research projects by graduate students.

• Melissa Allen, a doctoral degree student in communication disorders and sciences, 1577 Moss St., Eugene, who received the Kasey E. Lindeleaf Memorial Scholarship to continue her study of speech pathology.

• Karen Hirsh, a senior in educational studies, 656 W. 26th Ave., Eugene, who received the $4,000 Dorothy Carlson Parr Award. Donald Parr established this award to honor his late wife, a music teacher. The award goes to education majors who have a special interest in music and plan to become teachers.

• Timothy Moran, a master’s degree student in special education, 4320 Scenic Dr., Eugene, who received the $700 Pat Killgallon Memorial Award. He plans to develop a model for a charter school designed to serve at-risk and special education students.

• Manda Neilson, a senior majoring in educational studies, 314 N.E. Bean Dr., Madras, who received the Christine Anne Gillesse Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship, established by Will Morningsun in memory of his wife, provides a $400 scholarship to a student preparing to be a special education teacher.

• Nora Burke, a master’s degree student in educational studies, 34473 Pittsburg Rd., St. Helens, who received the $400 Kent M. Morehead Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was established by Morehead’s parents, Richard and Marylyn, for a student preparing to be a teacher.

• Apryl Davis, a senior majoring in educational studies, 3667 Main St., Apt. 13, Springfield, who received the full-tuition Fred K. Thompson Scholarship. Thompson spent his entire life working as a janitor in the Portland School District, saving his earnings and living a very frugal life. Thompson’s estate established the fund in memory of his belief in the importance of education and the vital role of the teacher.

• Sally Mann, a senior in educational studies, 3730 Redwood Dr., Springfield, and Erin Curtin, a senior educational studies major, 11160 S.W. Novare Court, Tigard, each of whom received $4,000 Helena DeGnath Wessela Awards. This award goes to students whose studies focus on children with disabilities.

• Lori Haskell, a master’s degree student in educational studies, 90690 Clark Rd., Warrenton, who received the $1,800 Paul B. Jacobson Scholarship. This award honors Jacobson, a former dean of the College of Education. The scholarship goes to a student majoring in educational studies who is interested in becoming a teacher and may also be interested in school administration.

• Krista Marie Gragg, a doctoral degree student in counseling psychology, 419 W. College Ave., Salisbury, Md., and Marcy Hunt, a doctoral degree student in counseling psychology, 26604 Jefferson Court, Bay Village, Ohio, each of whom received a $2,000 Jean Twohig Scholarship in Counseling Psychology. The award is for students who focus on human services and working with families and communities.
