23 UO STUDENTS RECEIVE OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIPS

EUGENE--Twelve undergraduate and 11 graduate students at the University of Oregon are recipients of 1997-98 Target of Opportunity Scholarships administered by the UO Graduate School.

A committee of administrators and graduate students selected scholarship recipients from applicants who self-identify with one or more of the four minority groups on campus--African-American, Native-American, Chicano/Latino-American and Asian-American students. To be eligible, graduate students must have a 3.0 grade-point average (GPA) or better, and undergraduates must have a 2.75 GPA or better.

Covering tuition only, these merit-based scholarships are open to full-time UO students of color who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

The following undergraduates were awarded scholarships beginning fall 1997:

  • Hung-Mei Hsiao, a junior mathematics major of 541 E. 31st; Ana Mross, a senior business administration major of 2665 Augusta St.; and Betty Pei Ting, a junior business administration major of 1500 Norkenzie Rd., Apt. 60, all of Eugene.

  • Cynthia Lee, a senior educational studies major of 2821 S.W. Willowbrook Court, Gresham.

  • Patrick Tandingan, a senior general science major of 12235 S.E. 105th Dr., Portland.

  • Tony Huu Huynh, a junior biochemistry major of 1270 Umatilla St., St. Helens.

  • Scott Fitzgerald, a senior Spanish major of 11803 N.W. 10th St., Terrebonne.

  • Gabriella Solis, a junior political science major of 11222 S.W. Cottonwood Lane; and Stephanie Yap, a junior general science major of 13866 S.W. Alpine View, both of Tigard.

  • Feliza Medrano, a senior art history major of 1207 Harvard Dr., Davis, Calif.

  • Jeffrey Wong, a senior biochemistry major of 586 Queensbury Way, Yuba City, Calif.

  • Katherine Feindel, a senior visual design major of 4420 S. Alton St., Greenwood Village, Colo.

    The following UO graduate students were awarded scholarships for 1997-98:

  • Four students from Eugene, including Marceline Bamba, a doctoral degree student in counseling psychology, 2518 Cubit St.; Sheila Page-Edwards, a doctoral degree student in sociology, 2548 Hasting St.; Maria Lopez, a doctoral degree student in school psychology, 2155 W. 18th Ave.; and Christina Ramirez, a doctoral degree student in school psychology, 631 1/2 Pearl St.

  • Kieu Trang Nguyen a master's degree student in education policy and management, 1829 Lakeview Ave., Klamath Falls.

  • David Lewis, a master's degree student in international studies, 4834 Driftwood Court N.E., Salem.

  • Three students from Springfield, including Kelli Beard, a doctoral degree student in special education: exceptional learner, 2555 Gateway St., Apt. 72;Laura Weiss, a master's degree student in education policy and management, 713 Oakdale St., Apt. 126; and Khaliyah Williams, a doctoral degree student in school psychology, 2555 Gateway St., Apt. 36.

  • Melvin Brewster, a doctoral degree student in anthropology, P.O. Box 10, Schurz, Nev.

  • Pilar Valenzuela, a doctoral degree student in linguistics, Lima, Peru.
