`UO TODAY' EXPANDS REACH TO SOUTH, CENTRAL, EASTERN OREGON

EUGENE--Since "UO Today" debuted in March on cable-access television channels in Eugene and Portland, the half-hour interview show has shared the scholarly interests and activities of University of Oregon humanities faculty with viewers in the state's major metropolitan areas.

With the arrival of the new year, "UO Today" also will air in Ashland, Bend, Medford, Pendleton, Salem and Sunriver.

In the Eugene-Springfield area, "UO Today" airs at 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays on TCI cable channel 11 (channel 96 as of Dec. 30 when TCI re-aligns several of its channels).

In areas of Portland served by Paragon Cable System, viewers can see the program at 7 p.m. Wednesdays on channel 27. At 4 p.m. Sundays, TCI Cable System subscribers in Portland and other parts of Multnomah County can see "UO Today" on channel 33.

Check local cable listings in other areas for broadcast schedules which are subject to change without notice.

Hosted by Steven Shankman, a UO professor of English and classics and director of the Oregon Humanities Center, each week's show typically includes two interview segments. Programs and guests set through early March are:

  • Week of Dec. 15: Men's tennis head coach Chris Russell, Intercollegiate Athletics, and political scientist Richard P. Suttmeier, Asian studies.

  • Week of Dec. 22: Music rehearsal with Baroque cellist Marc Vanscheeuwijck, mezzo soprano Anne Tedards and a special guest harpsichordist (repeat).

  • Week of Dec. 29: Dr. Helen Caldicott interview and lecture (repeat).

  • Week of Jan. 5, 1998: Gerald Kissler, associate professor of planning, public policy and management.

  • Week of Jan. 12: Sociologist Marion Goldman and Daniel Wojcik, associate professor of English and folklore.

  • Week of Jan. 19: Historians James Mohr and John Nicols, on their interactive maps of the ancient world project.

  • Week of Jan. 26: Clare Lees, associate professor of English, and Richard Kraus, professor of political science.

  • Week of Feb. 2: Art historian Charles Lachman, a tour of the UO Museum of Art's Asian collection.

  • Week of Feb. 9: Journalism professors Al Stavitsky and John Russial, on cyber-journalism.

  • Week of Feb. 16: Cellists Marc Vanscheeuwijck and Steven Pologe, associate professors of music.

  • Week of Feb. 23: Folklorist Carol Silverman and sociologist Linda Fuller.

  • Week of March 2: Fine arts professor Leon Johnson and Master of Fine Arts students.

  • Week of March 9: Forest Pyle III, associate professor of English.
