UO STUDENTS REACH OUT TO NEEDY CHILDREN WITH `GIVING TREES'

`Tis the season for final exams, but for some University of Oregon students, it's also a time to give to local children in need. For the third year in a row, UO students are participating in the "Giving Tree Project," which coordinators hope will generate more than 400 gifts for needy children in Lane County. "We've got Christmas trees located in all three of the UO housing office's dining halls," says Carl Yeh, UO assistant residence hall director and coordinator of the Giving Tree Project. "As in years past, the gifts placed by students under the trees will go to Centro Latino Americano, a group dedicated to improving the lives of the Hispanic, Chicano and Latino Children of Lane County, for their annual Christmas Fiesta." The trees, located in Hamilton, Carson and University Inn dining halls, are decorated with lights and index cards containing gift ideas. The suggested gifts range from toys to needed items such as clothing and diapers. In addition to individual gifts, students in Hamilton and Bean complex donated a total of $500 to purchase presents, and the Residence Hall Governance Committee donated $100 to purchase the Christmas trees and wrapping materials. Last year, more than 185 gifts were donated for local needy children. Sponsors of this year's project include the UO Mortar Board, a senior honor society, and the Hamilton Complex Council, student residents advisory group.
