AIR FORCE DUCKS FACE LOYALTY DILEMMA A few Ducks may have trouble figuring out which bird--the Fighting Duck or Air Force Falcon--to cheer for at the Saturday, Dec. 20, Las Vegas Bowl VI game. Among the nearly 130,000 living alumni listed in the UO Alumni Association records are 130 past and current officers of the U.S. Air Force, including Capt. Paula A. Jampas, assistant staff judge advocate at the U.S. Air Force Academy. The highest ranking Air Force Duck is Stephen C. Mannell, retired brigadier general and now director of public safety at Cranberry Township, Penn. The list of 130 Air Force officers who graduated from Oregon also includes 16 colonels, 19 lieutenant colonels, 13 majors and eight captains. The UO, Oregon's premier liberal arts research university, has more generals and admirals among its graduates than any other civilian university in the nation.
UO PRESIDENT MAKES FRIENDLY BET WITH AIR FORCE ACADEMY HEAD If the Air Force Falcons lose to the UO Ducks on Saturday, Lt. Gen. Tad J. Oelstrom, superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, says he'll send UO President Dave Frohnmayer 25 pounds of prime Colorado beef. If the Ducks lose, however, President Frohnmayer will send the three-star general 25 pounds of Oregon salmon.
