WHAT Bernard James, special counsel to the National School Safety Center and Pepperdine University professor of law, will speak to the 18th annual Oregon School Law Conference about new directions in school law in the effort to improve school safety. James will be available to speak to reporters directly following his keynote address.

BACKGROUND

The conference, "Accountability for Safe and Effective Schools: Oregon School Law," will bring together approximately 600 professional educators from across Oregon.

"As special Counsel to the National School Safety Center, Bernard James is on the forefront of new directions in school safety law as districts grapple with issues ranging from removing violent and destructive students to dealing with weapons on campus," says Steve Goldschmidt, conference director and associate professor, UO College of Education. "We hope this year’s conference will provide education practitioners with up-to-date information on school law and strategies for integrating law with education policy to help them deal with these very serious safety issues."

The Oregon School Law Conference takes place Dec. 10-11 at the Eugene Community Conference Center and is sponsored by the UO College of Education, the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators and the Oregon School Boards Association.
