EUGENE–Ross Gelbspan, author of "The Heat is On–The Climate Crisis: The Cover-up, The Prescription," will speak at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 23, in Room 100 of Willamette Hall, 1371 E. 13th Ave. on the University of Oregon campus.

Gelbspan, whose talk is free and open to the public, says that heating of the Earth’s atmosphere has propelled the world climate into a new state of instability.

"This new era of climate change could well be the most profound threat ever facing humanity," he warns. "The most predictable casualty of climate change is stability–in our political systems, our economic organizations and our weather."

In 1997, Gelbspan published a book on the global climate crisis titled "The Heat Is On: The High Stakes Battle Over Earth’s Threatened Climate." It was excerpted in the Washington Post and the San Jose Mercury News. A U.S. paperback edition, "The Heat Is On: The Climate Crisis, The Cover-Up, The Prescription," was published in 1998 by Perseus Books.

Gelbspan retired several years ago after a career in journalism as a reporter and editor at the Philadelphia Bulletin, the Washington Post and the Boston Globe. He received his bachelor of arts degree at Kenyon College.

The UO Institute for a Sustainable Environment is sponsoring the event. For more information, call (541) 346-1328.
