UO MIDDLE SCHOOL CONFERENCE FOCUSES ON YOUTH SUCCESS

EUGENE–The University of Oregon’s Youth Enrichment and Talented and Gifted program is hosting "Success in the Middle: A Conference for and about Middle School Boys and Girls" on Sunday, Feb. 18, and Monday, Feb. 19.

The conference will explore youthful successes and address related issues such as effective communication skills and skilled decision-making.

"Introducing the Next Generation" is scheduled from 7—9 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18, in the Auditorium at Churchill High School, 1850 Bailey Hill Rd. The presentation–designed for adults–will explore the world of youths 18 years old and younger through music, theater and a special presentation by William Strauss, co-author of the book "Millennials Rising." Encore Theater and the Eugene Opera will perform. Middle and high school youths also may attend. The cost is $1 for students and $5 to $10 for adults. Pre-registration is not required.

On Monday, Feb. 19, a no-school day, "Just for Middle School Students" will present a full day of exploring the possibilities, challenges and decisions facing youths during their transition into adulthood. The event–designed for the students– includes theater performances, group interaction, career explorations and door prizes. Activities are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Erb Memorial Union, 1222 E. 13th Ave. Cost is $20 and includes a conference packet, lunch and snacks. Tuition assistance is available. Space for this event is limited to the first 300 participants, and pre-registration is required.
