EUGENE---A pair of University of Oregon events for Lane County middle school girls has been moved to accommodate larger than expected crowds. But don't rush out to register--"Girls Night Out" and the UO "Success in the Middle" conference are both sold out. A pre-conference "Girls Night Out!" on Friday, Feb. 27, has been moved from the Casanova Athletic Center to the Wilder/Hellman Room at the Eugene Hilton, 66 E. 6th Ave. "Girls Night Out!" will help girls of all ages explore what it has meant to be a girl in the past few decades. A woman's acoustical guitar group, "Babes with Axes," will perform songs from the `50s and `60s, rewritten for today's young women, and a theater group made up of high school girls will perform a special drama about issues facing girls today. Oregon State Sen. Susan Castillo will moderate the event. The adult conference session on Saturday morning featuring Sharon Thompson, nationally recognized authority on adolescent girls, will take place at the UO Casanova Athletic Center, 2727 Leo Harris Parkway. Thompson also will lead a panel of local experts in a discussion of the issues facing middle school girls. In other panels, young college women will reflect on their experiences as middle school graduates. Thompson's book, "Going All the Way," and other books and information about resources in Lane County will be offered. Organizations that support girls, such as the Girl Scouts, will be present to talk with students and adults. All other events will take place at the original locations as planned. "This conference has struck a chord with so many people, both middle-school girls and adults," says event coordinator Jayne Mickles. "We regret that we can't accommodate all the people who want to come." "People tell us that this is just what they need for their daughters and for themselves because there are so many questions and unresolved issues that the conference will address," Mickles adds. -30- #P--6069/Local, OrDailies
