EUGENE--Minnie Bruce Pratt, author, teacher and civil rights activist, and Suzanne Pharr, author and founder of the Women's Project, will speak at a week-long University of Oregon conference exploring the challenges of those who seek to protect individual freedom. The March 1-9 "InterSEXions" symposium, "Envisioning Equality," is sponsored by the Committee on Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Issues. All events are free and open to the public. Pratt will read from her poetry and discuss her views on the religious right at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, at Mother Kali's Bookstore, 720 E. 13th Ave. On Monday, March 2, Pratt will read from her soon-to-be-released fourth volume of poetry, "Walking Back Up Depot Street," which explores the intersection between race, class, gender and sexuality. Her reading will be at 7 p.m. in the Browsing Room at the Knight Library, 1501 Kincaid St. Pharr will bring the symposium to a close at 4 p.m. on Monday, March 9, in the Alumni Lounge of Gerlinger Hall, 1468 University St., with her discussion about coalition building as an effective means to achieving equality. She is the founder of the Women's Project, whose efforts include monitoring the activities of white supremacists and the religious right. Other symposium events include: Tuesday, March 3 4 p.m. Linda Kintz, UO associate professor of English, will lead a workshop examining the sociology and history of religion in Oregon over the past several decades, tracing the move of religious conservatives into politics.
