BACKGROUND
The Oregon Campaign, a six-year fund-raising effort to solicit private funds for scholarships, endowed professorships, curriculum development and research, has succeeded in revitalizing and re-energizing education at the University of Oregon. The campaign increased student scholarship endowment totals from $13.9 million to $30.7 million and endowed faculty chairs from 22 to 75. In addition to funding a variety of teaching and research initiatives, the campaign financed construction of a new law school, the William W. Knight Law Center; renovation of the old law school building for arts and sciences classrooms, Grayson Hall; a new indoor athletic practice facility, Ed Moshofsky Sports Center; a new campus child care facility, Vivian Olum Child Development Center; and renovation of the journalism building, Allen Hall.
Final totals for the campaign are both "surprising and gratifying," says UO
President Dave Frohnmayer. Rocketing far beyond the original goal of $150 million set in 1994, Oregon Campaign final totals are expected to exceed $250 million, endowing faculty chairs, funding new student scholarships, and providing seed money to develop exciting new approaches to education.
"The people of Oregon have shown that when the cause is right, the support is
there," says Vice President Duncan McDonald. "This is a groundbreaking effort, not just for the UO, but for our state."
