BACKGROUND

Demonstration of the newly released interactive CD-ROM that will be distributed to all newly admitted UO students will be held simultaneously in Portland and Eugene.

"The UO Experience" soon will be arriving in mailboxes across the country and around the globe, giving newly admitted students a multi-media sense of the University of Oregon. It may be the first of its kind in the nation.

The CD-ROM is designed for students who have been admitted to the university. Students generally apply to a number of universities and are often admitted to more than one. In this case, the student must then make the often difficult decision among the accepting institutions. With the help of "The UO Experience," students admitted to the UO can explore what college might be like even before they arrive on campus.

After an initial mailing of 2,500 CD-ROMs, the UO admissions office will distribute another 500 to 1,000 copies per week during the peak period of admissions activity.

The project, under development for more than a year, brought together the talents of more than 40 contributors from UO faculty, staff and students, the UO New Media Center, and the surrounding community, including Sony Disc Manufacturing of Springfield and IP/KOKE Printing of Eugene.
