EUGENEMore than 30 University of Oregon student and staff recruiters will visit Portland on Monday, Jan. 24, to scout for talented minority students interested in becoming Ducks.
From 69 p.m., the university will host its first-ever "Portland Community Night" at Self Enhancement, Inc., 3920 N. Kerby Ave. near Jefferson High School. The free event is intended especially for students of color and their families in the Portland metropolitan area.
The University of Oregon hopes that by bringing its recruiting team to Portland, it will attract a larger minority audience than it has for similar minority recruitment efforts on campus in the past. Brochures about the Jan. 24 event have been mailed directly to individual students and to Portland-area public schools.
"We are going to Portland because its more accessible for parents and students who dont have a way to get to Eugene," says Patty Lopez, UO assistant director of admissions.
The evening will get underway with opening remarks by UO President Dave Frohnmayer and a performance by the UO Gospel Ensemble.
Students and parents then may attend informational sessions on the campus community, financial aid, housing and admissions to better inform themselves of what college life is all about and to learn more about the "world of opportunities" the University of Oregon has to offer them.
Sessions specifically for parents will cover helping students prepare for college and making the transition to college.
Throughout the evening, a computer lab will be open to help students and parents fill out admission applications and financial aid forms on-line. Participants also will be able to explore the UO web site at http://www.uoregon.edu, and refreshments will be served.
For more information and to register, call the UO Office of Admissions, 1 (800) BE-A-DUCK (232-3825).
