EDITORS NOTE:
Drew Gilliland will meet reporters at the John Hyland Construction, Inc., trailer on site. You may enter the construction site at the entrance to the UO Outdoor Program Trip Building, 1225 E. 18th Ave. Follow the driveway to the trailer.A 90-ton crane will literally raise the roof at the new University of Oregon Indoor Tennis Center adjacent to Esslinger Hall, 1525 University St., between 88:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 28. Two 150-foot-long roof sections will be lifted 50 feet in the air and then welded in place to the building frame. The tennis center is the final phase in a $20-million project to modernize the 70-year-old UO Student Recreation Center. Six fully enclosed tennis courts will be housed in the center, replacing four covered courts that were torn down in an earlier phase of the project. The project is scheduled for completion in July 2000. Funding for the construction comes almost entirely from student fees.
