EDITORS NOTE: All events are at the Erb Memorial Union (EMU), 1222 E. 13th Ave., unless otherwise indicated. All Tuesday events are sponsored by the Black Student Union. The University of Oregon will be closed and no classes will be held on Monday, Jan. 15, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
EUGENEThe Martin Luther King Jr. remembrance at the University of Oregon this year will focus on the beginnings of the Civil Rights movement, its ongoing impact and building community through diversity.
"Our hope is that this event, A Dream to be Achieved: Building the "Beloved Community" in the New Millennium, will help us move toward healing past injustices and building community on and off campus. In pursuit of this goal, we will focus on inclusiveness, historical awareness and remembrance," says John Shuford, MLK Celebration Planning Committee coordinator.
The UO Presidents Office is a major sponsor of this years events, along with the Black Student Union, the Multicultural Center and the Office of Student Life.
"Its important for us to focus on the crucial issues of social change and community that Martin Luther King embraced," says UO President Dave Frohnmayer.
