SOURCE: David Conley, UO associate professor of educational leadership and director, Standards for Success, (541) 346-6155; e-mail <conley@ oregon.uoregon.edu>.Were fairly sure why Johnny and Jane have trouble learning to read but the jury is out on why so many of their counterparts in college still need remedial courses to make the grade. University of Oregon researcher Dave Conley thinks it may have something to do with the kind of standards different states set for high school graduation. Conley, a UO associate professor of educational leadership, is heading up a project to help solve the problem. The national Standards for Success project, a collaborative venture sponsored by the Association of American Universities (AAU) with funding by the Pew Charitable Trusts, will draft a plan to coordinate high school graduation standards with university admissions requirements. Representatives from nearly 20 AAU universities will meet on the UO campus Jan. 2930 for the first of several "national conversations" to establish how to define university admission standards. Participants will bring examples of the kinds of work expected of incoming freshmen. The all-day sessions are set at various campus locations. For a schedule, contact Pauline Austin (541) 346-3129.
