EUGENE--The American Academy of Microbiology (AAM) has bestowed the honor of Fellowship on Franklin Stahl, a University of Oregon professor of biology and a member of the Institute for Molecular Biology. The mission of the Academy is to recognize scientists for distinguished achievements in microbiology and provide microbiological expertise in the service of science and the public. More than 1,300 AAM Fellows from 27 countries represent all areas of microbiology including basic and applied research, teaching, public health, industry and government service. Stahl's primary areas of expertise are human genetic engineering, DNA research, genetics of viruses and heredity. He is an American Cancer Society Professor of Molecular Genetics and was named a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellow in 1975 and 1985. Stahl became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1982, and is a member of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences. He received American Cancer Society Research Career Professorships in 1985, 1990 and 1995, and a John D and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 1985. Stahl received his A.B. in 1951 from Harvard University and Ph.D. in 1956 from the University of Rochester.
