EUGENE--The University of Oregon has named Dale Morse, associate dean and the Charles E. Johnson Professor of Accounting, as interim dean of the university's Charles H. Lundquist College of Business.

Provost John Moseley announced on Thursday, Jan. 22, that Morse will become the university's dean of business, effective immediately. His appointment will extend until the position is filled through a national search which will get underway later this academic year.

"We're very fortunate to have someone of Dale's caliber step in to fill this position," said UO Provost John Moseley. "Dale's colleagues have expressed to me their full confidence in his abilities to lead the college through this transition period, and their appreciation of his thoughtful yet decisive management style."

Moseley listed among Morse's credits his contributions to the design and implementation of the award-winning revisions to the Master of Business Administration program, his leadership as chair of the accounting department, and his recent appointment as associate dean.

"I'm delighted to be selected for this position and I look forward to working with my colleagues to continue our efforts to meet the needs of the community and our students," said Morse. "We will move forward to build upon the reputation the college of business has earned under my predecessors for providing excellent undergraduate and graduate education."

Morse, 50, succeeds Timothy W. McGuire who is leaving to become executive vice president and chief operating officer of a Pittsburgh, Pa., consulting firm. Under McGuire's leadership, the college received national awards for its reorganization of the Master of Business Administration Program, which increased the focus on entrepreneurship. The restructured college introduced a minor in business, a new Business and Industrial Sales Program and a new International Business Communication Program. The college also increased and strengthened the faculty and offerings at the James H. Warsaw Sports Marketing Center.

Morse joined the Lundquist College accounting department in 1991 where he specializes in cost and financial accounting. He is the author of two textbooks on managerial and cost accounting, as well as articles published in the Rand Journal of Economics, the Journal of Accounting Research, the Journal of Accounting and Economics, and the Financial Analyst Journal.

Morse received his bachelor's degree in 1969 and his master of business administration degree in 1975 from the University of Oregon. While an undergraduate at UO, he was an outstanding varsity tennis player, and he continues to be active in the sport. He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1978.

A native of Eugene, he is married to Leslie Mittelberg, owner of Swahili Imports. He has two sons, Jered, 12, and Tyler, 9.
