Saturday, Jan. 24--Children's Concert Series: Animal Friends and Fables

UO horn professor Ellen Campbell will lead a children's concert titled "Animal Friends and Fables." The one-hour program begins at 10:30 a.m. in Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $3 for adults, $2 for children and students or $5 for a family.

Selections on the program include "Circus Suite," "Aesop's Fables" with music and a narrator, and the story of Bingo the Dog--an audience-participation piece with toy instruments. Assisting Campbell on the program are Assistant Professor Sid Haton, piano, and Assistant Professor Janet Stewart, narrator. Campbell's eight-year-old son Neill will accompany her in a Bach minuet for horn and piano. Pre-concert music will be provided by the Middle School Horn Club of Eugene.

The Children's Concert Series, subtitled "Lively Music for Young Listeners," is designed to present children ages 5-12 with a variety of interesting listening experiences, and to expose them to a broad musical spectrum that they might not otherwise encounter.

Sunday, Jan. 25--Faculty Artist Series: Steven Pologe and Victor Steinhardt

Cellist Steven Pologe and pianist Victor Steinhardt will be featured in a Faculty Artist Series recital at 4 p.m. in Beall Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $7 general admission and $4 for students and senior citizens.

The program contains three selections: "Sonata for Cello and Piano" by Cesar Franck, "Suite No. 3 for Solo Cello" by J.S. Bach, and "Le Grand Tango for Cello and Piano" by Astor Piazzolla.

Pologe joined the UO music faculty in 1993, coming from the Honolulu Symphony, where he had been principal cellist for 13 years. He received his professional degrees from the Eastman School of Music and from the Juilliard School.

Pologe has played with the Rochester and Buffalo philharmonics and the Brooklyn Philharmonia, and he has served as principal cellist with the New York String Ensemble, Rome Festival Orchestra, Aspen Chamber Orchestra and Philharmonic Symphony of Westchester. He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, and in Italy and Sweden.

Steinhardt is professor of piano at the University of Oregon. One of this area's most popular and acclaimed pianists, he has been a featured artist at the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival in California, the Sun Valley Music Festival in Idaho, the Chamber Music Northwest Series in Portland, Bargemusic chamber series in New York, the Mohawk Trail Concerts in Massachusetts, and the Oregon Bach Festival.
