Thursday, Feb. 12--Chamber Music Series: The Petersen Quartet

The Petersen String Quartet, one of Germany's leading chamber ensembles, will give a Chamber Music Series concert at 8 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. Reserved-seat tickets range from $8 to $22, available in advance from the Hult Center at 682-5000. Student rush tickets will be sold at the door for $5 and $9.

The program includes Mozart's "Quartet in B-flat Major," Schulhoff's "Quartet No. 1" and Schubert's "Quartet in D Minor," also known as "Death and the Maiden." A free lecture at 7:15 p.m. offering insights and recorded excerpts from the program will precede the concert.

The Petersen Quartet is widely acclaimed as one of the most exciting young quartets to have emerged from Germany in recent years. Founded in 1979 by students at the Hanns Eisler Musikhochschule in Berlin, its members now occupy principal positions in leading orchestras in Berlin and Leipzig before devoting themselves to the quartet full-time.

Since then, the Petersen Quartet has won many international prizes, including second prize at the 1985 Evian Competition in France, first prize at the 1986 International Chamber Music Competition in Italy, and second prize at the 1987 ARD Competition in Munich.

For five years, the quartet was resident at the Berlin Radio, a collaboration which led to a close relationship with Capriccio, for whom they have recorded three CDs of Mozart quartets, two prize-winning CDs of works by Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff, a Berg/Janacek/Dutilleux disc, a disc of Boccherini quintets, a Grieg/Schumann disc, and two CDs of Beethoven quartets.

The Petersen's 1997-98 appearances include extensive tours of Germany and a three-week tour of the United States, including their debut at Carnegie Hall.
