UO PROGRAM TO EXPLORE STATUS OF CIVIL RIGHTS IN U.S.

Martin Luther King Jr. Anniversary

Have civil rights in the United States improved or worsened since the death of Martin Luther King, Jr.? And what can we expect in the new millennium? A panel of local civil rights activists, educators and journalists will explore these and other questions during "Reclaiming the Flame," a roundtable discussion on the status of civil rights in the United States sponsored by the University of Oregon Humanities Center. Moderated by UO law professor Dennis Greene, the panel takes place at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16 in the Ballroom, Erb Memorial Union, 1222 East 13th Ave. A reception will follow. "Our goal is to engage in a thought-provoking community discussion focused on social issues both in Eugene and in our contemporary society," says Greene. The panel will address issues of youth alienation, personal ethics, the status of political activisim in the United States, the criminal justice system, and the relationship between mass media and people's perceptions of politics and group identities.
