EUGENE–Dealing with alcohol and food issues, and conquering depression are the focus for four conferences organized by the University of Oregon Substance Abuse Prevention Program in January and February.

All will take place from 8 a.m.—4:50 p.m. in Room 150 of Columbia Hall, 1215 E. 13th Ave., on the UO campus.

"Conquering Depression" is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23. Eugene psychiatrist Jerome Vergamini will discuss the fundamentals of identification and treatment of depression, including natural and pharmacological therapies.

"Beer, Booze and Books," on Sunday, Jan. 24, showcases nationally known author and speaker Jim Matthews’ work on the effects of campus drinking, especially with regard to athletic and academic performance. The conference also will encourage a critical examination of alcohol’s role in students’ lives.

"Food Addiction" is offered Saturday, Feb. 13, by instructor Lucy Zammarelli. She will provide a profile of compulsive overeating, bulimia, anorexia and other food addictive behaviors, and will emphasize caring strategies for friends and family members suffering from eating disorders.

"Children of Parents With Alcoholism," slated for Saturday, Feb. 14, addresses the unique challenges and concerns that confront children, adolescents and adult children of alcoholics.

These one-day conferences offer one unit of college credit to graduate and undergraduate UO students who attend all sessions and complete all assignments, final examinations or projects. Community professionals and others also are welcome, with certificates available that serve as proof of attendance for application toward professional development hours or for re-certification purposes.

Registration for these one-day conferences costs $40. Early registration is encouraged.

UO students may use Duck Call to register. Community professionals and students also can register at the Registrar’s Office in Room 220 of Oregon Hall, 1585 E. 13th Ave., on the UO campus until the last business day prior to the conferences.
