The regular weekly music wrap-up story, covering Feb. 713, will resume on Jan. 26.EUGENEThe University of Oregon School of Musics Band Department will present a special benefit concert on Sunday, Jan. 31, for one of its members, Ray Becerra, who is battling cancer.
The program, featuring selections by the Oregon Wind Ensemble, the Oregon Symphonic Band, the UO Trombone Ensemble and the Green Garter Band, will begin at 7 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave. Admission to the concert is free, but donations will be accepted at the door.
Becerra is a 23-year-old junior trombone player majoring in music education. He has been in the marching band and the basketball band for two years apiece, and in the Green Garter Band for one year.
A year ago, Becerra was diagnosed as having a form of lymphoma cancer. After undergoing treatment, the cancer appeared to be in remission, but it reappeared shortly after Becerra returned with the UO Marching Band from the Aloha Bowl in late December. Treatment began immediately, and his physicians say the prognosis for this form of cancer is difficult at best.
Becerras parents, Frank and Araceli Becerra, live in Junction City where a special account has already been set up at the Citizens Bank branch. Proceeds from the Jan. 31 concert and other donations will be used for Becerras medical expenses, as well as for a trip his parents hope to treat him to.
