EUGENE--A preview of a new exhibition celebrating the University of Oregon Museum of Natural History's first 10 years in its current location at 1680 E. 15th Ave. will spotlight the museum's varied collections beginning July 23.

"Across Space and Time: Treasures from the University of Oregon Museum of Natural History" will be on display in the museum lobby through Aug. 31. After a one-month hiatus, the exhibition will re-open in October to kick off the museum's 10th anniversary celebration, which will feature a series of events this fall and winter.

The exhibition highlights the breadth of the museum's collections. Items on display include battle axes collected during the famous Stanley expedition in Africa, fossils from prehistoric Oregon, Native American baskets, bird eggs, a Macedonian bridal costume and a chunk of the Willamette Meteorite.

"Many of these objects haven't been shown in decades," says collections manager Pamela Endzweig. "They span millions of years and millions of miles."

The "Treasures" exhibition will continue through mid-March 1998.

Erika Remmy, the museum's program assistant, stresses that despite construction of the new William W. Knight Law Center next door and partial closure of the adjacent UO parking lot, the museum will be open its normal hours through Aug. 31. After its annual closure for staff vacations and museum maintenance from Sept. 1-30, the museum will re-open Oct. 1.

The museum is open from noon-5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, except university holidays. Admission is a $1 suggested donation.

The museum's free visitor parking spaces, formerly south of the building, have been moved to the basketball courts on the northern edge of the Bean parking lot, east of the museum. Visitors may reach these spaces from East 17th Avenue and Columbia Street.

Motorists also may park at city parking meters on East 15th Avenue in front of the museum or in the free two-hour parking zone east of the museum on Moss Street south of 15th.

For information, call the museum, (541) 346-3024. A recorded message about museum exhibits and activities also is available 24 hours a day by calling GuardLine from a Touch-Tone phone at 485-2000, ext. 3447.
