TALENTED KIDS EXPLORE `MEANING OF COOL' AT UO SUMMER CAMP
|
July 1, 1997
Close to 100 middle school kids are examining why "cool" is cool, digging into quantum physics and experiencing the joys of Middle Eastern dancing at the University of Oregon this week. These happily curious preteens are enrolled in the UO College of Education's 18th annual Summer Enrichment Program for talented and gifted students. Participants live in residence halls with counselors and attend classes designed for the unique needs of the gifted. "A lot of these kids are from small towns where they may be the only kid in school interested in writing poetry. This program allows them to meet other kids who are as interested as they are in math, science or literature. It helps them feel better about themselves," says Bobbie Blackwell, program director. The first session of the Summer Enrichment Program ends July 5. The second session runs July 6-19.
